Gratus | From The Desk Of Jeff Mitchell

[1]I continue to be inspired and gratified by the response of our clients and friends to COVID-19.

During law school one of my best friends – and fellow married student – received notice that the US Marines had activated him for Operation Desert Storm.

A life changing event – but off he went.

We studied Torts and Property; he took his Spring exams in barracks (or was it a tent?).

Before offensive action on the battlefield, the cover of a national magazine contained a general map of the region with the location of various forces.

I sent the magazine to my friend as part of a care package.

In his response letter, he included a statement I have never forgotten.

He thanked me for the package and the magazine, calling it a great momentary distraction.

Then he said, “By the way, look at the cover map again and find the front line. I am somewhere in front of it.”

Wow. That was a moment of pause.

Today, we have one client in front of the front line in the COVID-19 fight.

They amaze us with their ability to focus on the growth of their business while simultaneously confronting the day-to-day challenges of COVID-19 on that same business.

It is a battle – one they are winning.

We are grateful for their leadership. Thank you, English Meadows!

We have also noticed clients reinventing their business model and selling their retail products through Facebook-live calls – thank you, Sugar Magnolia!

Or, gaining recognition for amazing work with their Dominoes’ franchises in a national television ad spot – thank you, Kevin and Allison Shaw!

Or, doing online presentations of formerly in-person wine tastings – thank you, Blacksburg Wine Lab!

Or deciding to partner with a local non-profit to enable a food truck to serve hot meals to families in need – thank you too, Harmonia Holdings Group!

Thank you all and so many more.

Perhaps most importantly right now we are grateful for our new entrepreneurs.

Believe it or not, during the past few weeks we have helped people start new businesses – thank you, entrepreneurs – fearless, bold, and eager!

Thank you all for leading the way forward and inspiring us every day.

We are grateful for your leadership and passion.

Why the subject line Gratus?

It is the Latin language root of many words such as grace and gratis, and yes, most importantly, gratitude.

Think about this today…

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”

– Helen Keller
